After revisiting favorite series multiple times, N.J. Pflug found himself increasingly interested in how stories were constructed: how early decisions echoed later, how seemingly small moments reshaped entire arcs, and how endings could transform everything that came before them.
The saga was built backward from its conclusion. Each event, system, and turning point exists in service of a larger trajectory. To reach the men responsible for his death, Kian enters the Pillars of Aeterna, a militarized academy where hierarchy is law and power is measured through mastery of Aether. Advancement is earned. Weakness is exposed. There is only one problem. He cannot wield Aether.
In an empire that equates magic with worth, that deficiency should end him before he begins. Instead, it forces him to adapt, relentlessly, physically, strategically. He does not care about reputation. He does not care about approval. He cares about access. Beyond the empire’s borders, the Dirge remain where they have always been: a distant, persistent threat that few truly fear anymore. The empire trusts its strength. Its walls. Its long-standing stability.
